Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders include a number of problems with initiation of sleep, maintenance of sleep and awakening. Many medical problems contribute to these – such as pain, breathing problems, GI problems such GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder) and others. While associated with obesity, it can be seen in younger adults with no sign of obesity.

In sleep apnea, many experience breathing disorders, snoring, interrupts in breathing (apnea), gasping, nightmares, frequent arousals and so forth. Medical complications can be as simple as dry mouth or morning headaches.More significant can include Hypertension, irregular heart rate, panic attacks, impaired concentration, daytime fatigue and intrusive sleep events.

Other sleep disorders are equally serious. Restless Leg Syndrome may ruin sleep for the patient and their partner. Idiopathic Hypersomnia (Severe sleepiness of unknown cause) can result in accidents, loss of work, deterioration in function and many complications.

I often refer patients with anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD and similar problems to sleep labs for definitive diagnosis and often treatment. When caught early, long term complications and medication use may be avoided.
